I'm not in England!!!!

Now, I'm in New York. I don't quite know how this happened, but I'm here until the end of the week. Whilst you lot are currently tucked up in bed, it's a glorious sunny late afternoon here. My room is on the 22nd floor, I overlook Times Square, the internet is cheap(ish), and I'm technically here to work.

Oh well.

Never mind. I'll find some way of living with me.

I'll stop being smug now and go out to find a bar. :)

Gray and rainy

Well, not rainy as such. I should do a real update every once in a while.

I came back from New York. I bought Vodka. Cheap. Now I'm back where I usually am on a weekday, and have to fill out 3 A4 diagrams of 47U high rack cabinets. That's after I've decided what I'm going to put in them. After that, there's a website which I don't know what's going on that needs to be updated, and then taken down and completely re-written.

And then I'll have lunch.

Strange, stranger, and then stranger still.

For reasons that I won't go into, I have 3 monitors on my desk. My desktop spans all three. Actually the main is because I'm a developer.

And I just found a good way to see if a website is done vaguely properly in CSS: Expand browser to resolution of 3072x768. Actually browsing the internet in something this wide is very very very strange. And quite addictive.

New Milestone

I just read something shocking: The Gentoo Wiki was hacked.

For those of you who don't know, I shall explain what both Gentoo and a Wiki is.

Gentoo is a linux distribution. It is based on the following concept: Whenever you want to install something, you go download the source code and then compile it. Upside is that you can customize it to include stuff you need and get rid of crap you don't. Downside is that a complete install can take 2 whole days of compiling. Oh well. There's a love/hate thing about it.

A Wiki is an amazing invention. It is a website, but one in which anyone is free to change. If you need to create a centre of information, a wiki is useful as any incomplete/incorrect data can be updated by real people who actually know what they're talking about. The Wikipedia is a general encyclopedia, but in a Wiki format.

From the above, you might conclude that "hacking" wiki isn't necessarily a difficult. Thing. In fact, it might involve something as complicated as "editing the page" which you wish to "hack".

Oh Dear.

In other news, I now own some stuff, I'm eating lunch, and drawing pretty things in Photoshop. Also, I'm going back to New York (yay!) in a month. Yay!

My Sacrifice

I got my first proper paycheck today. I had to look at it many times and get a calculator out to confirm that the following is true.

About 26% of what I earn goes to the government.

There was me, thinking I got a tax free allowance, and then the usual 10% and then 22% bands, and assumed that tax might be around 15-20% overall. Indeed, it was. What I hadn't bargained for was that about a third of my total tax payment is for NI. Which is, a bit silly.

It all seems to be a way of subtly screwing as much money out of the people as possible. I'm all in favour of people putting up income tax on higher bands, because if you're earning that much, you can afford to pay that much. However, increasing an across-the-board tax is just stupid.

Oh well. I'll go back to counting the pennies.
